The Diversity of Finland makes it a must see travel destination. With modern cities like Helsinki to large remote wilderness areas of Finland’s Lemmenjoki National Park, travelers will find Finland inviting.
Settled about 8500 BCE by nomads, Finland had a history similarly to other Nordic countries. Although it was originally populated by hunter-gatherers, the bronze and iron ages brought agriculture, contact with other cultures, and industry. As early as the 13th century, Swedish rules took power in the area, which explains why the culture of Finland is associated with Swedish culture even in the modern era. However, in the 19th century the area became part of the growing Russian empire, only to declare independence in 1908. In both WWII and the Cold War, Finland occupied a precarious situation between Allies and Axis and East and West.
Situated among three bodies of water and the countries of Russia and Sweden, Finland has a unique and stunning geography that ranges from magnificent forests and lakes to rock formations. Similarly, its flora and fauna are quite diverse, as the ecosystems were greatly influenced by the last ice age. Although the climate in the area is often cold, it is also varied, with some areas having frigid summers and others being warm enough for farming. However, Finland is also home to a natural wonder more unique and stunning than the country's wide array of natural resources, the midnight sun. In North Finland, the sun does not set in the summer for over 70 days. In the winter, it does not rise for over 50. This makes the destination a literal bright spot for those who want to see the sun at night.
Finland is also a destination for tourists who are interested in history. Old Rauma, which just became part of UNESCO's world heritage list, is one of the oldest Finnish harbor towns that are rich with history and beauty. Of note are the architecturally significant buildings, 15th century church, and skilled craftspeople. Other architectural wonders, castles, draw visitors to the country, which also boasts museums and other historical attractions. Helsinki, the country's capital, remains a popular destination because of the juxtaposition of modern entertainment, nature, and historical importance. The industrial Tampere and the upscale Turku are also popular cities in the country.
Finland is a country that is perfect for the visitor who wants to relax in one of the many luxurious hotels. The peace and quiet that the natural atmosphere provides is perfect for the visitor seeking tranquility. However, the beautiful geographical landscape provides a perfect medium for outdoors enthusiasts, participants in extreme sports, and even academics or science enthusiasts. Blending history with nature, culture, and entertainment, Finland is a unique and diverse location for a holiday.
