 Gulf Islands, British Columbia

The Gulf Islands, British Columbia are a series of tiny and medium-sized islands, which lie off the southern coast of Vancouver Island in the Georgia Strait. In total, there are 255 Gulf Islands and the tinier, uninhabited islets can only be reached by a private boat. The Gulf Islands are a popular destination due to their mild climate and many days of sunshine throughout the year.

Tourist and hikers favor the islands because there they can bond with nature and take relaxing walks. Wild animals, such as bears, pumas or wolves, are not found on the islands; however, deers feel comfortable in this area and love to graze in the meadows.

Among the populated Gulf Islands are Gabriola Island, Island Galiano, Maine Island, Island Pender, Salt Spring Island, Valdes Island, Island Thetis, Kuper Island and Saturna Island. People who visit the islands are, above all, looking for tranquility, which they can encounter in abundance. The islands are known for their landscapes and the numerous guesthouses, which offer a wide range of wellness services and amenities.

Gabriola is the northernmost part of the Gulf Islands and is famous for its excellent diving area and hiking trails. Particularly appealing to explore are the Pethroglyph Park and the Malaspina Gallery. Gabriola Island is also an ideal setting for cycling, canoeing, as well as kayaking.

Salt Spring Island is the most original of the Gulf Islands. Many artists have settled here and sell their goods at the weekly market in Ganges. Ganges is home to a popular marina, which spreads a Mediterranean flair during the entire summer. On Salt Spring Island, homemade food is a tradition. Therefore, there are several farmers who sell fresh fruits, cheese, bread and other agricultural produce to affordable prices.

Every traveler should check out the local wineries, as the wines produced here are the finest in Canada. One can also take a trip up the Mount Maxwell. Although, the road is sometimes extremely rustic, it is worth the ride to marvel at the breathtaking panorama from the peak.

Maine Island is another petite sibling of the Gulf Islands, British Columbia, which is a perfect spot for days of rest and relaxation. In the neighboring areas Miners Bay and Village Bay, there are plenty of historic buildings. Most of them are dating back to the Gold Rush period in the 1900's. Since then, Maine Island is considered a fancied holiday get-away; thus, it is not surprising that the Springwater Lodge, which opened in 1892, is the oldest continuously operating hotel in British Colombia.

The two Pender Islands (North and South) were originally one island, until in 1902 the sand bar that connected both atolls has been dug into a channel for ships to pass through. In 1955, the island parts were united by a wooden bridge, which is still standing and makes a stunning background for photos.

The Pender Islands are a dream destination for beach walking. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy the ocean, lakes and rivers there, and go sailing, rafting or kayaking. On the Pender Islands, there are many walking routes which invite guest to discover the beauty of the islands.
