Key Biscayne, a tropical island paradise on Florida’s south east coast is just six miles and 20 minutes from downtown Miami, Key Biscayne is an island seven miles long and 2 miles wide. Surrounded by the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Biscayne Bay to the west the key is the northern most island or key of the Florida’s Keys. Key Biscayne, made up of coral rock and surrounded by mangroves, is home to several parks, nature preserves and some of the most stunning white sand beaches in the world. Just off shore of the city of Miami, Key Biscayne is worlds apart from its parent to the northeast. A separate island that was not connected to the mainland until the building of the Rickenbacker Causeway in 1947, Key Biscayne has seen modest growth, with almost a village like atmosphere; the island is home to only 10,500 people. Two major parks are located on the Island, Crandon Park, made up of 800 acres on the north end of Key Biscayne offers a marina, tennis center, golf course several picnic areas and a nature center. Crandon Park has been the setting for the Miami Master Tennis tournament since 1987. The southern two thirds of Key Biscayne island is home to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Miami’s oldest structure, Cape Florida Lighthouse originally built in 1846, sits along the southern shore of Key Biscayne and the open waters of the Atlantic. The clear blue waters offer some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling along the parks mile long beach. Biscayne Bay makes up the western shore of the park and provides ideal kayaking, canoeing and fishing. The interior of the park provides ideal camping and picnic areas with numerous bike and hiking paths. A visitor center with food and a museum are also available to the public.
Key Biscayne, with its small village atmosphere attracts tourist to the many shops and restaurants that line the white sand beaches. Luxury vacation resorts as well as several name brand hotels offer accommodations for stay in Key Biscayne.
Just before reaching Key Biscayne, the Miami Sea Aquarium is located on the Rickenbacker Causeway. During the 60’s the Sea Aquarium was home to the T.V show, Flipper.
