Steeped in rich tradition and history, Lisbon, the capital and largest city in Portugal, is one of the oldest cities in the world. Under Roman control as early as 205 BC, Lisbon was captured by the Moors (Muslims) in AD 711 who made Islam the official religion and built mosques. In 1147, Lisbon returned to Christian rule when crusader knights conquered it and converted the mosques into churches.
The great Lisbon Earthquake on November 1, 1755 nearly destroyed the city. An estimated 60,000 died in the earthquake and tsunami and fires that followed. The city was rebuilt and it is now the wealthiest region in Portugal, producing 45% of Portugal's GDP.
Lisbon's location on the banks of the Tagus River and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean (just eight miles) lends it to a pleasant climate. Boasting a six-month summer season from May through October, Lisbon also offers the warmest winters in Europe. Average daily winter temperatures are around 59° F with mild nights hovering in the 40’s.
Because of its lengthy history, Lisbon is also home to many types of architecture – Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque, among others. One of the most famous structures there is the Tower of Belém, a World Heritage site built in 1515 and an example of the Manueline style. Built as a fortress to guard the harbor, it once served as a prison.
Lisbon employs approximately 75% of its labor force in the service sector. Its main industries are oil refineries, shipyards and textile mills. Lisbon has a strong transportation system as well. The Lisbon Metro is a major public transportation source, as are trams, commuter trains and buses.
Culture and entertainment abound in Lisbon. The downtown district of Baixa is well-known for its shopping, cafés and street performers. Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon. With its spectacular views and village atmosphere, it is a must-see on any visit. Lisbon is famous for its fado music which can be found throughout the city at restaurants and other venues. They have a long-standing sports tradition and are known for their love of football and for being home to Europe’s largest soccer venue – the Stadium of Light. In June, Lisbon hosts a five- day street celebration to celebrate the memory of Anthony of Lisbon, a saint famous for preaching to the poor.
With a long, colorful history and architecture to match, a nearly perfect climate, beautiful views and plenty of culture and entertainment, it’s easy to see why Lisbon was voted the 25th Most Livable City by Monocle Magazine. |
