One particular site to visit would be the Santa Eulalia. The Gothic cathedral was sculpted over two centuries. Complete with gargoyles, animals, and other mythical creatures, the cathedral expands over 5 isles. It was given its name after Eulalia of Barcelona, a young virgin who fell prey to martyrdom during the times of the Romans. Urban legend says that she was exposed in the public square for all to see. Then, from the heavens, a snowfall began and covered her naked body. The Romans were outraged that the Gods took pity upon her and they put her into a barrel, stuck it with knives, and rolled it down the street. Her body lies in a crypt in the cathedral.
The church holds many interesting facts of artwork as well. For instance, the choir stalls house the coat of arms for The Knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. One of the two chapels was dedicated to “Christ of Lepanto”.
Another story told to generations, is that the crucifix in the chapel is from the actual ship that fought at the Battle of Lepanto. The legend states that the crucifix was originally erected straight but through a miracle it shifted to the right to avoid being hit by a cannonball.
