Marbella, Spain

The Costa del Sol or the "Sun Coast" is a region comprised of coastal towns and communities such as Marbella, along the Mediterranean coast in southern Spain. The region welcomes millions of people annually, who arrive at the International Malaga airport, or who are transported by cruise ships or yachts and dock in the city's harbor. Tourists typically visit several towns by automobile, bus or boat, and stay at the luxurious resorts located along this stretch of coastline from Gibraltar in the west, to Nerja in the east. World renown for its tourism among the elite of Northern Europe and the United States, Marbella is Spain’s jewel by the sea, and is a premier vacation destination for its beaches and its local culture. Tourist come to experience Marbella's vast array of attractions, historical sites, fine dining, and and shopping.

Marbella, Spain is a city and municipality in Andalusia, Spain. Marbella borders the Mediterranean Sea, and is situated in the province of Málaga. The population of the city was roughly 135,000 in 2010. Magala is the second most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth largest in Spain. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and history spans about 2,700 years. This is the southernmost large city in Europe and lies 62.14 miles east of the Strait of Gibraltar and 80.78 mi north of Africa.

Marbella and the surrounding area enjoy a subtropical, "Mediterranean" climate. It is this climate which that attracts millions of travelers to this area. European visitors typically escape the harsh, cold winters in Europe and spend their vacations in a milder climate such as the one in Marbella and the Costa del Sol. This region is famous for its warm winters with average temperatures of 62.6 °F during the day and 45–46 °F at night from December to February. The summer's season lasts 8 months from April to November.

The mountains surrounding Marbella contain the remnants of Phoenecian and Carthaginian settlements in the Rio Real area. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and its history spans about 2,700 years. In the times during the Roman Empire, the city was named "Salduba" or “Salt Sea.” Later during Islamic rule, the Moors built a castle and a settlement in this city, renaming it Marbil-la. The name Marbella, was derived from “Marbil-la”, an Islamic name which means "a pretty little town in a fertile district.” In 1485, the city was conquered by the Christians. The remains of the Roman bridge of Marbella still stands to this day. Alfonso de Hohenlohe, the heir of Prince Max Egon zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, bought land commercially in Marbella in 1950 and marketed the area as a tourist destination. He opened the Marbella Club Hotel in 1954. This hotel quickly proved to be a hit with vacationing members of Europe's ruling class.

Marbella has many historical and cultural points of interest and attractions to visit. Popular sites include the Arabian wall, the Bonsai museum, Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo, the Old City Center, Playa de la Bajadilla, Playa de Fontanilla, Puerto Banús (a marina built by José Banús) The Golden Mile (featuring the Marbella Club Hotel and its beach club), the late King Fahad's Palace and Iglesia de la Encarnación (the oldest church in the city of Marbella). The city boasts many golf courses and tennis tournaments throughout the year. Marbella, Spain is also surrounded by a variety of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and shops to experience.
