San Pedro Sula, Honduras

 

 


 With over 800,000 inhabitants, San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras and is also the commerce and business pivot of the country. Situated in the northwest corner of the country, the city is a mere 37 miles from Puerto Cortes and the Caribbean and a distance of 110 miles to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

 San Pedro Sula was established by Nomadic people who kept domestic animals as well as practiced farming. By 1536, it had become a very important city serving as a warehouse for goods being transported to and from Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. However, it was during the 19th century that it evolved to an important commerce and business hub, thanks to the boom in the Banana industry.

 San Pedro Sula is a beautiful city with many historical sites visitors that awe visitors. When in the city, the Museum of Anthropology and History is a popular stop. Lying a few blocks from Central Park, the museum houses artifacts from the pre-Colombian era to modern day history. Beautiful Mayan artifacts are displayed at the museum, which is open Monday to Saturday but remains closed on Tuesdays.

San Pedro Sula Honduras Cathedral Another attraction you must visit is the Guamilito Market. This is a handicraft market that is open every day and is the best place to get gifts and souvenirs during your stay in Honduras. Some notable items available in the market include Mayan replica pottery, mahogany carvings, Honduran cigars, hammocks, woven baskets and a range of beautiful designed T-shirts. Prices for these items are not fixed and thus you can get anything at a bargain price.

 The Central Park in the city together with the main Cathedral are also popular visitor sites in San Pedro Sula. The city park is well lit and is always busy with people doing their own trades. It is the perfect place to sit and have a conversation with the locals or simply watch people in their hustles and bustles.

 When in San Pedro Sula, there are many things to see and do. The city has good hotel, communication and banking facilities. It also hosts a wide range of restaurants that serve both local delicacies as well as international cuisines. If you want to relax, there are many night clubs and bars you can stop by. Eating out is one of the activities you should look forward to as the food is cheap and very delicious. Try some Honduran traditional meals or opt for popular international varieties.

 

 


 During the day, you can enjoy a spectacular football game, with tickets going for slightly above $3. From the game, you can take a trip through the city or liaise with your travel agent to visit other famous attractions such as the Mayan Ruins, Lake Yojoa, Tela and others. Accommodation in San Pedro Sula varies and fits all budgets. You can opt to stay at the nearby 5 star hotels, at apartments, hostels or even villas.

San Pedro Sula boasts a modern airport located just a short 7 miles from the city center, Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport caters to a number of international airlines including Sol Air, American Airlines, Atlantic Airline, Continental, TACA among others.

 San Pedro Sula is a perfect gateway for the traveler looking for an unforgettable affordable vacation at an exotic destination.
