Southern Asia is known as The Subcontinent and, being home to approximately 1.6 billion people, is the most densely populated area in the world.
India is, by far, the largest country in Southern Asia and is cupped between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The rest of the South Asian countries surround India - except for Sri Lanka and The Maldives which are islands located in the north Indian Ocean - and include, from east to west, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Although great diversity in language and culture is shown over the entire region, there are a few things that are shared by all of the Southern Asian communities, including the tropical monsoonal climate and the Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic religions.
The tropical Maldives Island archipelago paradise experiences constant 30°F temperatures and consists of over one thousand small islands and coral atolls. Its capital, Male, lies on the North Male Atoll, but the archipelago's many international seaside resorts are far more popular. Sri Lanka is one of the world's greatest cricketing nations and was formerly known as Ceylon. Famous for its tea, this "Teardrop of India", is divided into nine separate administrative regions with the Western Region being home to the country's capital, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.
Muslim Bangladesh gained its independence only in 1972 but can trace its history back for thousands of years. Home to the longest beach in the world, the landscape consists mainly of low-lying plains and gigantic mangrove forests. This is in stark contrast to the mountainous Nepal, where Mount Everest is the highest peak in both the Himalayan Annapurna region and the entire world. Nepal is known for its ancient and venerable cities - particularly those in the Kathmandu Valley - and for its favorite tourist pastime, Nepal trekking.
Bhutan is the smallest of the landlocked Southern Asian nations and is a land where most tobacco products and all plastic bags are banned. This Land of the Thunder Dragon measures its wealth in GNH, Gross National Happiness, which is an innovative system that combines economic growth with cultural preservation. India, home to the Sacred Ganges and the breathtaking Taj Mahal, is divided into 28 states and 7 union territories. Its 1.15 billion inhabitants communicate in English, Hindi and a staggering 21 further national languages. It is a country of great diversity, constitutes the globe's largest democracy and gave the world Bollywood.
Pakistan's national currency is the Rupee and, when in Pakistan, the best things to buy are leather goods, carpets and sporting equipment. The historic Silk Road runs right through the country, which is divided into regions such as remote Balochistan, fertile Pujab and the Islamabad Capital Territory. Afghanistan is home to several tribal cultures, including the Uzbeks, the Pashtuns and the Hazaras. Although most of the country is presently somewhat unsafe, the land has an almost palpable history and features exquisitely decorated mosques and sapphire lakes.
Southern Asia is one of the most fascinating, and beautiful, regions in the world. |
