I read with disappointment this week about Abby Sutherland’s setback in the Indian Ocean, As one who has been following her story at Abbey Sunderland .com I know how heartbreaking it was for her to give up the boat and her quest to navigate around the world by herself. I personally do not look at this for failure for Abby , but more of congratulations, how many other 16 years old’s could travel halfway around the world by themselves, most 16 year old’s can’t even make it to the other side of their town or city without getting lost.
I for one was one that set out to make my mark on the world at a young age, not as daring as Abby’s quest, but the same as in the negative response I got from friends, acquaintances and even my parents. With my taking of flying lessons at the age of 16, I too was ready to see the world. At this young age I already knew where I wanted to go and had a plan, Abby has that vision and she also acted on it, congratulations again. From all the naysayers that thought I was crazy or to young, I think through the years they are jealous. Even today I get looked at or thought of as different as being a Captain of a 777 airliner, most can not believe that I have attained this position on one of the world’s largest planes with one of the world’s largest airlines at the young age of 50.
From reading the comments and articles about Abby Sunderland, I agree whole heartily with her parents and supporters on their decision on backing Abby on this quest. I believe each individual knows ones capabilities and what they can and can not accomplish. I personally do not believe age has anything to do with a persons capabilities. Still to this day and for as long as I can remember I always am asked “How old are you” like this really matters. I applaud Abby’s parents for backing her 100% on this adventure of a lifetime.
Abbey, you need to look at this as not finishing what you set out to accomplish , but more as one foot back and 2 feet forward. Life is going to throw you curve balls and your are going always have people second guessing your actions. The main thing you need to remember is you tried, they did not, and you learned your lesson and you will keep going forward. Good luck and I look forward to your next adventure, for I know their will be many to follow.
