The city of Turin, Italy, better known as Torino in Italian, is regarded as the automobile capital of Italy, headquarters of FIAT. Turin is capital of the northern Piedmont region, near the French border. The Turin metropolitan area covers about 50 square miles, with a population of over one and a half million people. Turin was host of the 2006 Olympic games, and is a gateway to the French and Italian Alps. The Turin airport offers service to several European cities, while transatlantic service departs from the Milan Malpensa airport, about two hours from Turin by daily buses.
Turin was the original capital of unified Italy, and is a treasure trove of museums covering the rich history of Italy. Most palaces and other buildings in Turin were built in the French Baroque style, much like Paris. Turin has several universities, the University of Turin was founded in 1404.
Within Turin it is much easier to walk or take public transportation to the many memorable attractions, as driving and finding a parking space is difficult. Turin has an efficient system of trams and buses running all day, passengers must remember to buy tickets before boarding. The Po river runs through the city of Turin, which is surrounded by hills with the distant Alps beyond. Several ornate palaces and mansions dot the surrounding hills, and the Mediterranean coast is about an hour away from Turin.
At the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, enjoy a nostalgia trip through Italian movie history, the museum is housed inside the Mole Antonella, a towering Italian landmark that dominates the Turin skyline. The Museum of the Automobile in Turin has an impressive array of vehicles dating from the 1800s. Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento is a museum depicting the unification of modern Italy.
Opened in 2002, the Giovanni and Marella Agnelli Picture Gallery was donated by the Agnelli Family, owners of the FIAT automotive group, to the city of Turin. The Turin museum of Natural History houses the University of Turin natural history collection, in a 17th century building.
Several fine dining establishments date back to the 1800s, surrounded by outdoor trattorias and pizzerias popular with locals and visitors.
