The southern region of Portugal, known as the Algarve region, is a vast expanse of land, where more than 300,000 individuals reside. Historically, Portugal has been inhabited for thousands of years, and a few previous residents were the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors, to name a few. Each of these occupying civilizations left their mark on the countries architecture and culture, allowing Algarve to have an allure and mystique that beckons to be explored.
The area is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, affording it access to some of the most revered waters in the world. Anglers seeking to catch the big one, flock to Portugal’s waters in efforts to land billfish, marlin, tuna, and the ever elusive, fighting swordfish. The finest dining options in the Algarve region are primarily seafood dishes with a Spanish flair, and their cuisine is famous across the globe. This region is widely reputed for its fertile valleys that produce the delicate grapes that have been known to produce many fine wines, the most noted of them, are their port offerings.
Portimao
Portimao is a charming, and busy city, yet it still features many sites exemplifying Neolithic architecture, particularly concerning the churches and cathedrals in the area. Water activities are the most popular attractions, and Portimao is a premier launching post for charter boats and deep-sea fishing excursions. Plenty of kiosks and boutiques specialize in equipment rentals such as surfboards, scuba gear, jet skis, and other outdoor paraphernalia. Explorers and beach bums alike, flock to the coastline to investigate the amazing grottos and rock formations of limestone that front the beaches.
Lagos
Lagos is just east of Portimao, and offers the same amenities, yet it tends to be less crowded, affording visitors and more relaxed environment. One popular attraction in this area is the Alentejano National Park, where nature lovers, photographers, hikers, and bird enthusiast share an extensive network of well-defined trails to explore. Golfers frequently take on the challenging holes at Penina Championship Golf Course located in the area.
Albufeira
Tourist-oriented, Albufeira is the top destination for travelers seeking an all-in-one vacation hot spot. The city has an abundance cliff lined, world-class beaches to be explored. Several local resorts offer all-inclusive deals that include amenities such as lodging, meals, charters, equipment rentals, and golf passes. A few miles outside of the town, families can enjoy a day trip to Zoomarine, a theme park featuring amusement rides, games, an educational marine center, and an on-site zoo.
Faro
Faro is a perfect destination for those seeking the beauty and conveniences of tourist-oriented city, without actually being surrounded by swarms of tourists. Day to day life here is more relaxed, and cobblestone streets are dotted with Moorish styled architectural structures. It is commonplace in Faro to encounter friendly locals, eager to initiate conversation and swap ‘fish tales’. The Rio Farmosa Nature Reserve is a must-see attraction, where an abundance of flora and fauna provide temporary shelter for birds during migration seasons. |
