 Faro, Portugal

Faro, Portugal is rich both interesting history and beautiful natural attractions. Its Subtropical-Mediterranean climate draws tourists from around the world throughout the entire year. This capital of the province of Algarve is known to combine rich history with a modern and ever advancing society. So whether visitors would like to see historic building and churches, or spend their time exploring the famous Praia de Faro Beach, everyone is sure to enjoy a holiday in Faro, Portugal.

The thriving city of Faro is part of the Faro Municipality located in Southern Portugal. With a population of just over 41,000, it offers the comforts of a big city while not being overwhelmingly large. Nature lovers will enjoy the natural reserve “Ria Formosa”, which is a total of 170 kilometers. At this amazing reserve visitors can see literally hundreds of species of birds, and rare migratory species. Faro is home to an international airport, making it easy for visitors to land directly into this jewel of the Mediterranean.

Old City Faro, Portugal The Ria Formosa has always been a big draw to the area of Faro. The city of Faro dates back to the 3rd century when it was known by the Romans as Ossonoba. During the 8th Century, Moorish rule came into play, but the city of Ossonoba was still very much valued. Its name was later changed to Faro, after a local Muslim chieftain. In 1755, the powerful Lisbon earthquake damaged most of Algarve, but Faro was unaffected due to the sandy shores of the Ria Formosa. Since that famous event, Faro has become the administrative seat of the entire region.

The area is known to produce such agricultural products as figs, almonds and carob beans. Fishing is also important to the economy in Faro, as it is located on the Mediterranean Sea. Four popular Portuguese wines are also produced in Algarve. Food processing, cement and construction are Algarve’s main industries. Faro’s economy also depends a lot on tourism, especially during summer months.

History lovers who visit Faro must visit the Old City, where they can visit the Largo da Se, the first Christian Church that was built in Portugal. Here visitors will see decorated tiles and other works of art, dating back many centuries. Another highlight inside the church is an Oriental organ dating back to the 18th Century. Tourists will thoroughly enjoy walking down historic tiled streets while viewing historic white washed homes in the Moorish and Portuguese style.

As Faro boasts of a beautiful Subtropical-Mediterranean climate, its summer months are normally sunny and warm, with average temperatures in the mid 80’s (27-29°C). Not much rain fall occurs during the summer months. The winters have average temperatures of 46-63°F (8-17°C), and the average rainfall is about 19.69 inches (500 mm).

For tourists visiting in the summer months, a popular sport is quad biking. Tours can be arranged to take visitors all over the beautiful terrain in Algarve. It is truly an unforgettable experience, one of the many that can be enjoyed in Faro Portugal.

Getting to Faro is made easy with Faro International Airport being just 2 1/2 miles outside the city.
