Manzanillo a small seaside village located on the southwestern shore of the Nicoya Peninsula about a 20 minute drive up from Santa Teresa. The road following the coast up from MalPais and Santa Teresa ends here in Manzanillo and then heads inland, if traveling to points farther north one might consider a 4 wheel drive vehicle as the road can be almost nonexistent in some places. Manzanillo has not seen the influx of foreign tourist yet. One will find long stretches of flat sandy beaches that are protected by an offshore reef that tends to keep the waves small and makes for ideal snorkeling. Swimming can be dangerous at high tide due to many underwater rocks.
Manzanillo is described by many as a true Costa Rican pueblo, with only a few places to stay and a few restaurants in the area have made this a more tranquil place for the local Ticos. One of the best restaurants of the area is the Atardecer Dorado, known for its seafood the restaurant offers a fantastic view of the Manzanillo beach and located right where the coastal road turns and heads inland.
Heading north along the beach, one will find a long stretch of beach that is great for exploring, large amounts of driftwood can be found along this secluded beach. Rio Manzanillo is found just 1 mile north of where the coastal road heads inland.
Getting to Manzanillo, one has 2 options, flying into to Tambor airport with direct flights from San Jose and then taking a taxi to Santa Teresa. Or one can drive to Puntarenas and take the ferry to Parquera and then drive southeast through the town of Cobano then into Santa Teresa with a right turn head north about 20 minutes .
