When thinking about Rio de Janeiro most likely the first thing that pops into one’s mind is the beaches. Copacabana, undoubtedly one of the most famous beaches can usually be found on many lists of the top 10 beaches of the world. Immaculate, wide, clean, white sand beach, Copacabana stretches for 3 miles separating beautiful mountains and the deep blue waters of the Atlantic. Stretching between two historic forts, Fort Duque de Caxis to the north and Fort Copacabana to the south the beach is also famous for its backdrop of high-rise buildings and Surgarloaf Mountain to the north. One will find many activities available at Copacabana, from people watching, water sports, volleyball games and night parties the beach has something to offer everyone that loves the beach. Copacabana known for its beach is also a borough of Rio de Janeiro, with over 63 hotels and hostels available, the area has accommodations that are easy to come by and can be very reasonable. The area is filled with tree lined streets that offer a place for tourists and locals to mix and enjoy the many restaurants and small bars. Starting at the lifeguard watch tower Posto Seis, Copacabana ends at Princesa Isabel Avenue. Copacabana promenade extending along Avenida Atlantica from one end of Copacabana Beach to the other end was finally finished in 1970; this 3 mile long black and white stone walkway makes a wave like look the whole length of the walkway. Copacabana is a great place to sit back, relax with a Caiprinahas (Brazil’s national drink), and just watch the beach life unfold on one of the world’s most famous beaches. Planning a visit to Copacabana? Almost year round is the perfect time to visit, with year round sunshine and white sand beaches one cannot go wrong. June to August is the so called rainy season in Brazil, so plan early in the day for time on Copacabana.
Copacabana can get very crowded during weekends as well as holidays such as carnival week in Rio de Janeiro, it is advised to leave all valuables behind and just enjoy the views and water of Copacabana.
Getting to Copacabana is easy, with over 40 bus route serving the area as well as 4 Metro stations giving easy access via Cardeal Arcoverde station on the north end, both Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo stations in the middle of Copacabana and Ipanema Gal. Osori station give travelers easy access to Copacabana’s south end as well as the east end of Ipanema Beach.
