Aragon: Beauty and Mystery in Spain

The beautiful Spanish countryside, with its tall mountains, deep forests, and impressive seascapes lures travelers from all walks of life. The region of Aragon is one of the most picturesque in all of Spain, with its beautiful coastlines, charming villages, and adventure waiting around every corner. Once the rival kingdom to the kingdom of Castille, an arranged marriage between Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Portugal united this region and, ultimately, the whole of Spain became united under their rule. Today, Aragon is a great place to holiday with the entire family or to spend time with that special someone.

Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon, but there is so much more to this region than just this one city. This feisty city, located on the banks of the Ebro River, is filled with colorful cathedrals, bustling markets, and a veritable maze of streets and alleys. Restaurants, shopping, and so much more drive the frantic rhythm of this impressive city.

For a refreshing change, head to Huesca, the capital of the Argonese Pyranees. This quaint city on a hill is filled with Renaissance architecture expertly blended with modern structures. Standing quietly by the Isuela River, Huesca is vastly different from the throb of Zaragoza, yet has a charm that is unique and relaxing. Visit San Pedro el Viejo, many gothic style cloisters, and pay tribute to King Ramiro II of Aragon. Also located in the area is an exceptional Archeology museum. With artifacts dating back several hundred years, many of which document the families that led Spain to greatness, this museum is a must-see for those traveling in the area.

Also located along the Aragon River is the city of Jaca. This amazing Renaissance city was once a favorite residence of the Argonese royalty. Filled with Romanesque Cathedrals dating back to the 10th century and fantastic museums, this medieval city is filled with history and excitement. Visit the convent of the Benedictine nuns which houses the sarcophagus of Queen Dona Sancha, as well as the San Cristobal and San Miguel bridges.

The Aragon region of Spain with its beauty and mystery is a wonderful place to spend a holiday with the family, or just to get away from it all. From rugged mountains to beautiful coastlines, the region of Aragon has something for everyone. Gothic structures, medieval cathedrals, and a rich and beautiful history make this region well worth visiting.
