Escape to Castile and Leon, Spain


 

The largest and quite possibly most beautiful region of Spain is the region Castile and Leon. This region was created with the region of Castile la Vieja and the region of Leon united in 1983 forming one large kingdom. With dramatic histories of their own, uniquely woven together to create this beautiful region, the region of Castile-Leon has much to offer visitors looking for a perfect Spanish vacation. Many monuments, state parks, and other beautiful sights unite to create a holiday unlike any other.

Salamanca, one of the most memorable cities in the region, is a UNESCO world heritage site. One of the oldest cities in Europe, Salamanca is home to the oldest university in Spain. The University of Salamanca was founded by King Alphonse IX and students still come from around the world to study here. Visit the La Nueva cathedral with its towering dome and impressive architecture as well as its older counterpart which shares its yard. Many museums, monasteries, as well as restaurants make this city a must-see on any visitors list.

Burgos, the land of Castles, was founded in 884 and also has a rich and beautiful history. At the center of the town lies the grand cathedral. With its deeply medieval influences running throughout the city, Burgos transports visitors back in time and give a glimpse into the history that built this city. Old monasteries well archived museums, and authentic restaurants make this city a tourists delight.

The city of Leon was once the capital of the Kingdom of Leon. Visitors will be delighted by the Basilica de San Isidoro with its Gothic structure and beautiful frescoes. Also located here is the church of San Marco. Built during the Renaissance period, this beautiful church of San Marco houses artifacts and collections illustrating the importance of religion in the area and is still used for services on a weekly basis.

Many other medieval and Renaissance period towns and villages are scattered throughout the region and are well worth visiting. Travelers can enjoy all the offerings of villages like Soria and Palencia from the Romanesque period and Valladolid with its beautiful collection of artwork. So many quaint towns make traveling through the Spanish countryside a real treat.

 

The region of Castile and Leon, while filled with many medieval and renaissance period towns and sights, is also great for experiencing the cuisine that makes Spain great. Charming, down home restaurants, quaint cafes and even a series of luxury restaurants offer selection and variety for anyone traveling through the area.
