Madrid is one of 17 autonomous communities in Spain. It is located at the center of both the country and the Iberian Peninsula. Initially when autonomous communities were created, Madrid was supposed to be a part of the community of Castile-La Mancha as a simple matter of geography. However, as the capital of the country, it was to be given special status. There was political opposition to the idea that Madrid should have special considerations; therefore, other options were considered. One option was to integrate the city into another community or make it a unique region similar to a federal district. Instead, the government decided to make Madrid its own single-province autonomous community. The community of Madrid was made official and a Statute of Autonomy was issued in 1983.
The land that the community occupies was once part of the Roman Empire. In fact, it was home to important roads and communities. When the territory changed hands from the Romans to the Visigoths, the region lost significance and the population became scattered. The region began to regain importance when it passed into Muslim ownership. The Muslim government began to fortify the city to stop the advance of Christian armies from the north. These fortifications became the foundation of Mayrit—which ultimately became the city of Madrid. Over four centuries, the Reconquest took place, forcing Moors and Jews out of Madrid as Christianity regained hold over the territory. However, ownership of the land was frequently passed between Muslims and Christians. This shared ownership is what is partially responsible for the mixed culture that the now creates a rich and interesting community.
