Positioned in central London, London Victoria station is the second-busiest station in the city. The station serves as an Underground link, with the Victoria, District, and Circle lines all operating from Victoria. Trains operating from the station reach various destinations throughout the country, while the Gatwick Express serves as a shuttle for passengers headed to London's second-largest airport, London Gatwick Airport. The nearby Victoria Coach Station further provides coach services to cities throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
First opened in 1860, the complex now known as Victoria has undergone various developments in its long history. London Underground trains first began servicing the station in 1863, when the Metropolitan District Railway reached the station. Today, the railway forms part of the District line. The Victoria line only opened in 1969, when the platforms were built well below those used by the District and Circle lines.
The station has grown accustomed to welcoming some 80 million passengers each year, well above the capacity originally intended. Due to the influx in passengers, Victoria has to shutter its doors during peak service hours. When these delays occur, personnel close entrances to the station, only allowing passengers to exit until crowds reach manageable levels. In order to address these concerns, the station is currently undergoing construction work that will add entrance points, escalators, and ticket offices.
Bus service is offered for passengers who wish to connect to other parts of London. These buses embark from various locations surrounding Victoria. Both standard buses and night buses have regularly scheduled stops at Victoria, making it easy to reach other destinations in the capital.
In addition to serving as a major transportation hub, Victoria is a major commercial center. Victoria Place, a popular shopping destination, is attached to the station. Within this shopping complex are several large retailers and independent retailers, including The Body Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Sainsbury's, and Next. Shoppers can also grab a bite to eat at one of the various fast food restaurants and pubs located throughout Victoria Place. The station itself is also home to several restaurants and staples such as WHSmith, Boots, and an M&S Foodhall.
