When anyone around the world thinks of the entertainment industry, Los Angeles is the city that comes to mind. People from around the world call Los Angeles their home. All different languages, cultures and types of people reside in the city which sits on the broad basin of Southern California. While the city can offer glimpses of Hollywood stars, shopping and luxury, it is also home to theme parks, 841 museums and galleries, ethnic enclaves and multiple sources of evening entertainment. Various landmarks in the city are known the world over, including: Kodak Theatre, Griffith Observatory, and Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

With 18 million people residing in the city, it is the 2nd largest in the United States. It is surrounded by multiple varieties of landscapes including the Pacific Ocean, mountains, deserts, forests and valleys. People arrive from around the country and the world daily by plane, train, bus and car to catch the dream only a place like Los Angeles, California can offer.

Since the completion of the transcontinental railroad in the year 1876, Los Angeles has been the hub of the west coast. The city was founded in 1781, but did not become a part of the United States until California was gained in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The city has a rich history dating back to its founders. Some of the more notable events were the 1932 Summer Olympics held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, 1950 was the year the city was making more cars than Detroit, MI, and in 1969 Los Angeles became one of the birthplaces of the internet. The summer Olympics returned to Los Angeles in 1984. Notably, the 1932 and 1984 Olympics were the only two that earned a profit.

Los Angeles is home to many industries. Seven Fortune 500 companies reside in the city. The port of Los Angeles is the largest container port in the United States, and almost one million people traveled on cruise ships from the port in 2010. However, the city is best known as the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” It is said that one out of every six people in the city of Los Angeles works in the creative industry.


The weather in Los Angeles can be described as nothing but comfortable. Los Angeles is the city of sunshine. It only rains thirty-five days a year on average in the city. The average annual temperature in the city is 66 degrees. January is the coldest month with lows during the day of 59 degrees on average. The warmest month is August. The average highs in August are 79 – 90 degrees.
