Since Southern California is usually associated with technology and newer developments, many people don’t know how far back San Diego’s history stretches. The area was inhabited by the Kumeyaay People for more than 10,000 years before the European settlers took over. The first European settler to arrive in San Diego was Juan Cabrillo. His ship stopped in the San Diego Bay in 1542, after which he claimed the area for Spain. This area would later serve as the settlement of Alta California two centuries later. San Diego’s mission building is one of the oldest standing structures in the city, dating back to 1769. Later in 1821, the city became part of Mexico, which was independent at that time. It didn’t become part of the United States until 1850.

San Diego ranks eighth on the list of the country’s largest cities. It is also the second-largest city in California. Most of San Diego’s economy is based on military operations, international trade, manufacturing and tourism. As the county seat of San Diego County, the city is one of California’s most favorable tourism destinations. The area has everything that tourists could desire. The climate is mild all year. Located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, there are miles of sandy beaches that welcome thousands every month. Families, singles and groups can all enjoy this multi-purpose attraction, providing the opportunity to swim, sunbathe or play in the sand.

This gorgeous Southern California city is also home to many unique parks. Balboa Park is the largest urban park in the United States. It encompasses 1,200 acres. Named after a famous explorer, it was deemed a historical landmark in 1977. There are various gardens that feature botanical flowers, roses, cacti and Japanese plant life. There are also several buildings, reflecting pools and streams in Balboa Park. It is one of the most tranquil places in the city. The area was originally created with drought-resistant plants and flowers, since they survive well in the desert climate. A more festive and exciting atmosphere can be found at Belmont Park, which is an amusement park. Children and adults can both enjoy the attractions and rides at this location.

The San Diego Zoo offers travelers the chance to see animals, birds and reptiles from all over the world. They also feature species that are native to Southern California. The zoo has a Safari Park, which is the best alternative experience to an actual safari. Guides drive visitors around the grounds, showing them the exotic animals that would be seen in an African safari. Another main attraction is Sea World. Both children and adults can learn about aquatic life, as well as see shows with whales and other sea creatures. Don’t forget to make a stop in the historic downtown San Diego area. This portion of the town has been preserved, renovated and still reflects the old-time charm of a 1950s beach town. Although the attractive climate makes travel comfortable any time of year, fall and spring are the best times to visit San Diego.
